Description:

A component of the Commercial Transportation Energy Efficiency and Fuels Initiative, the Freight Efficiency Program (FEP) complements existing energy-efficiency efforts under Transport Canadas Freight Efficiency and Technology Initiative (FETI). To reduce greenhouse gas emissions by Canadas freight transportation sector, the Freight Efficiency Program administers the Freight Incentives Program (FIP), provides funding for marine-shore power pilots, and produces awareness programs for shippers and freight forwarders. - The Freight Incentives Program The Freight Incentives Program (FIP) provides financial support to enable the purchase and installation of GHG-reduction technology and equipment. Funding under the program is available to companies in the rail, marine and aviation freight transportation sectors. - Marine shore Power Pilots The Marine shore Power Pilots Program was created as a mechanism to fund the installation of marine shore power at suitable locations across Canada. A feasibility study was completed in 2005 and several locations were recommended. Through 2006, this element of the Freight Efficiency Program remains to be implemented. - Awareness Programs for Shippers and Freight Forwarders Aimed at buyers of transportation services for themselves or for clients, this initiative will promote awareness of the environmental and economic benefits of energy-efficient transportation. In practice, these awareness programs will seek to inform freight transportation decisions of the environmental impact of various choices. In addition, the program will seek to identify and address barriers to the adoption of environmentally friendly alternative shipping methods. - Awareness Programs for Shippers and Freight Forwarders Aimed at buyers of transportation services for themselves or for clients, this initiative promotes awareness of the environmental and economic benefits of energy-efficient transportation. In practice, these awareness programs seek to inform freight transportation decisions of the environmental impact of various choices. In addition, the program seeks to identify and address barriers to the adoption of environmentally friendly alternative shipping methods.
