On 1 July 2002, the Drive Clean program was expanded to all municipalities in the "smog zone" from Windsor to the Quebec border, including the Niagara Peninsula and communities such as Ottawa, Kingston, Cornwall and Chatham-Kent. From 1999 to 2001, the Drive Clean program cut smog-causing emissions from vehicles in the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton by 15.2 per cent. The Drive Clean program is expected to reduce 100,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually.
