Description:The federal government, provincial and territorial governments and industry worked together to encourage increased investment in CO2 capture and storage and to facilitate the development and deployment of the required technologies. This measure was the federal contribution towards optimising the use of CO2 capture and storage in Canada. The goal of the CO2 Capture and Storage initiative was to move towards the optimal use of the capture and subsequent storage of CO2 in geological formations as a means of reducing Canadas greenhouse gas emissions. The goal was to be achieved by establishing an institutional foundation and base of knowledge (as none then existed); providing support for one or more projects to demonstrate the effectiveness of CO2 capture and storage via CO2 -based enhanced oil recovery and/or enhanced coal bed methane recovery; and addressing public concerns over the expanded use of CO2 capture and storage.
