Since October 2006, residents of the Brussels Capital Region have the option of giving up their vehicles in exchange for incentives offered by the Regional government in the form of a one-year subscription to a car share programme Cambio, along with either a one-year pass for the public transportation system, or a subsidy of up to EUR 470 for the purchase of a bicycle and biking equipment. Should the owner of a vehicle first registered prior to January 1997 give it up and have it destroyed, additional benefits are awarded: up to two years of transit and car sharing subscription; up to two years of car share, one year of transit and a bicycle bonus; up to two years of car share, and two bicycle bonuses. The person receiving the incentives cannot register a new vehicle during the period they are benefitting from the scheme.
