Description:

The National Carbon Mapping and Infrastructure Plan (NCMIP) was funded under the National Low Emissions Coal Initiative (NLECI) (AUD 50 million) and was established to drive prioritisation of and access to a national geological storage capacity to accelerate the deployment of CCS technologies in Australia. The  Australian Government is currently providing funding under the NCMIP for pre-competitive exploration work in a number of onshore and offshore areas to acquire data to assess the potential storage sites. The AUD 60.9 million National Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Infrastructure Plan (NCIP) (announced in the 2011/12 Budget) will build on the NCMIP and aims to accelerate the development and identification of suitable long term storage sites within reasonable distances of major energy and industrial CO2 emission sources.
