Reducing carbon emissions from the transport industry was identified as an area for further work as part of NTC’s strategic planning process. To encourage discussion of the issue, the NTC commissioned research into international and Australian state and territory schemes designed to voluntarily reduce emissions. The research report provides an analysis of the key learnings from these schemes and highlights the breath of positive work currently underway to reduce emissions and increase fuel efficiency.
In February 2012, the NTC held a roundtable discussion with government and industry to share the report findings and explore options to reduce carbon emissions from the transport industry. Participants were inspired by the good work completed to date and discussed the potential to develop a national voluntary program to reduce carbon emissions from the transport industry.
The NTC will now explore whether there is a business case to support taking a national program forward.
