The development of alternative refuelling infrastructure through the CNGIP is a key component of the Commonwealth alternative fuels programmes (Part of the Measures for a Better Environment). The CNGIP was to be a AUD 7.6 million programme designed to facilitate the establishment of a national network of CNG refuelling stations. There are currently 3300 public refuelling outlets supplying LPG and only 12 CNG outlets in Australia. The CNGIP was to supply seed funding for the substantial effort needed to address this imbalance. However the programme did not proceed due to lack of interest from the natural gas industry in Australia.
