Description:

The program contains an interdisciplinary assessment of the energy saving and renewable energy potential in all sectors of the Armenian economy. The main goal of the policy is to asses where energy savings are possible, in what amount, and how to achieve them.

Armenia is heavily dependant on imported energy and is able to meet only 35% of total demand for energy with its domestic resources, thus energy efficiency is an imperative in order to ensure continuous societal growth and development.

In addition, augmenting the use of renewable energy sources should be a high priority. Through energy efficiency and renewable energy deployment, Armenia will be able to decrease its dependency on imported energy sources and decrease its vulnerability to volatile oil prices in the world market. This will increase the energy security of the country.

The main goals of the National Program on Energy Savings and Renewable Energy 2007 include:

  1. Alleviate the inefficient growth of the energy sector by securing intensive implementation of energy efficiency measures.
  2. Efficient consumption of energy resources and maximal employment of renewable energy resources, through the application of targeted economic and legal mechanisms.
  3. Increase the efficiency of fuel-energy resource consumption in all sectors of the economy.
  4. Plan the development of energy resources of the country parallel to the advancement of energy saving and renewable energy, taking into account that increased energy efficiency usually has a low cost.
  5. Direct the finance policy of the country to energy saving and renewable energy development.
  6. Organize, promote and provide equal accessibility to modern technologies for all members of society, consumer and corporate alike.

The program estimates that the annual energy saving potential of the Armenian economy is 1 million tonne of oil equivalent.
