Chile applying for IEA membership
13 October 2010
On 13 October, the IEA Governing Board authorised Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka to begin discussions with Chile with a view to the country's obtaining membership in the Agency.
Mr. Tanaka spoke with Chilean Energy Minister Ricardo Raineri (left in photo) about the Board’s decision and Mr. Raineri then addressed the delegates and the IEA Secretariat saying, “The entry process of Chile is an important milestone for us.”
In May 2010, Chile became the 31st member of the OECD, and its first in South America. Chile’s like-mindedness with IEA member countries promises a mutually beneficial relationship. This will help the IEA to broaden and deepen its understanding of the Latin American region. Chile’s membership in the IEA would help bolster the country's energy security and diversification of it energy economy.
