Cumulative global energy supply investment by type in the WEO New Policies Scenario, 2014 – 2035

The world’s projected energy consumption in the World Energy Outlook 2014’s New Policies Scenario will require more than USD 40 trillion in cumulative investment in energy supply to 2035, together with USD 8 trillion to improve end-use energy efficiency. Naturally, the size and success of the efficiency effort will have a direct impact on the magnitude of the challenge on the supply side. Investment in both supply and energy efficiency is essential to satisfy the anticipated increase in demand for energy-based services, pushed higher by the expansion of the global population and economy, as well as to compensate for the steady decline in output from existing energy-producing assets as they reach the end of their productive life.
