The US launch of the IEA’s World Energy Outlook special report “Golden Rules for a Golden Age of Gas” took place on 1 June at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Senior government officials, industry representatives, academia, NGOs and media comprised the audience of more than 200 participants.

The guest of honour was Ambassador Carlos Pascual (US State Department’s Special Envoy and Co-ordinator for International Energy Affairs) who delivered the introductory remarks in which he commended the IEA for the report and said it is a very useful guidance for government, industry and other stakeholders.

Following a presentation of the key findings of the report by IEA Chief Economist, Dr. Fatih Birol, there were two interventions from Gina McCarthy (US Environmental Protection Agency, Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation) and Eric Pooley (Environmental Defense Fund, Senior Vice President for Strategy and Communications).

Ms McCarthy gave a summary of past, ongoing and future work of the EPA, and mentioned that EPA rules are closely aligned with those stated in IEA’s report. Mr Pooley thanked the IEA for putting out the Golden Rules, which he found was a jargon free and forceful case of promoting responsible development of unconventional gas by not only covering principles but also highlighting how much is at stake both environmentally and economically.
