26 October 2015
In his keynote opening address at Singapore International Energy Week on 26 October 2015, IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol highlighted the challenges and opportunities currently facing the global energy system and countries in Southeast Asia in particular. In this context, Dr. Birol questioned whether the global energy transition will be led by policies, or driven by events.
Following his keynote address, Dr. Birol met with Mr S. Iswaran, Minister for Trade and Industry Singapore. Minister Iswaran and Dr. Birol discussed the potential benefits of the long-planned ASEAN Power Grid and what needs to be done to move forward with its development.
Referencing remarks by Dr. Birol in his keynote speech on modernisation of the IEA and the need to build stronger ties with countries in Asia, Minister Iswaran said Singapore highly valued its relationship with the IEA and would be keen to see this relationship strengthen in the future.
