IEA Chief Economist given top German honor

The Chief Economist of the IEA, Dr. Fatih Birol, has received the Federal cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz/Verdienstkreuz 1. Klasse), the only general state decoration of the Federal Republic of Germany.
In a ceremony at the German Ministry of Economy (BMWI) in Berlin, States Secretary Jochen Homann, acknowledged Dr. Birol’s “outstanding work” on economic analyses. He particularly praised the IEA flagship publication World Energy Outlook, which is designed and directed by Dr. Birol, for its “comprehensive, timely and independent view” and said the study had become an important reference for the German energy and climate policy.
