Energy snapshot

Share of total final energy consumption covered by energy efficiency policies

At the global level, coverage of mandatory energy efficiency standards and regulations is roughly even among transport, industry and buildings. However, sector coverage differs across countries. In China and India, industry makes up the largest share of total final consumption covered. In the United States and the European Union, industry accounts for a smaller share than other sectors because there are fewer mandatory standards and targets in industry. Conversely, virtually all of the US passenger vehicle fleet is covered, as standards have been in place since the 1970s. In the European Union, mandatory vehicle standards were implemented only in 2009.
