Making coal clean: what's being done?

Coal is the second largest source of primary energy in the world after oil, and the biggest source of electricity generation. It currently provides 40% of the world's electricity needs. For the past decade, it has been the fastest-growing global energy source. But when coal is burned it emits large volumes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which scientists say contributes to global warming. On top of this, some power plants also emit other harmful pollutants like sulphur and nitrogen oxide. So what's being done to address this global climate change challenge?
