Fond Farewell to Executive Director Mandil
Executive Director Claude Mandil retires on 31 August after four and
a half years heading the IEA. Mr. Mandil took the helm only one month
before the outbreak of the war in Iraq, facing immediate concerns about
possible oil supply disruptions. He ably led the Agency during a period
when energy security again became a policy priority for governments around
the world. Under his leadership, the IEA successfully orchestrated the
second emergency oil stock release in its history in September 2005 to
offset supply disruptions caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and to
stabilise global markets. Mr. Mandil was also a driving force behind
IEA participation in the last three G8 summits which provided recommendations
to reduce CO2 emissions resulting from energy production and consumption.
His colleagues salute him and wish him a fulfilling and happy retirement.
