Electric Vehicles Initiative (EVI)

Background

The Electric Vehicles Initiative (EVI) provides a forum for global cooperation on the development and deployment of electric vehicles (EVs). The initiative seeks to facilitate the global deployment of at least 20 million EVs by 2020, including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles, by accomplishing the following:

  • Encouraging the development of national deployment goals
  • Launching pilot cities to promote EV demonstrations in urban areas, and share experiences and lessons learned
  • Sharing information on funding levels and research and development programs to ensure that the most crucial global gaps in vehicle technology development are being addressed
  • Exchanging information on EV deployment targets, as well as best practices and policies, to enable progress toward those targets
  • Engaging private sector stakeholders to focus on the benefits of EV procurement for corporate fleets and public-private investments in technology innovation

Target

At least 20 million electric vehicles on the road globally by 2020.

Progress

  • EVI has completed the first phase of its data collection from each government on public investment in research, development and demonstration; national goals for EV deployment; current national stock of EVs and charging equipment; and relevant government policies
  • China announced the creation of an International EV Demonstration Zone in Shanghai, where companies, research entities and other organizations from participating EVI countries are invited to participate in joint demonstration activities
  • EVI welcomed Denmark, Finland, India and Portugal as its newest members
  • Experts and high-level representatives from government, industry and the research community gathered at the Paris Motor Show (Mondial de l’Automobile) on 30 September and 1 October 2010 for an international dialogue intended to highlight key lessons emerging from EV/PHEV roll-out programmes in different regions, and to identify co-operative activities to accelerate their deployment in an economically and environmentally sustainable manner
  • A second successful meeting was held in Shanghai, China among EVI members and cities to discuss data challenges, among other topics. More information can be found here
  • A recent EVI meeting took place on 29th November to 2nd December in Barcelona, Spain
