The 8th Meeting of the IEA Energy Business Council took place as a video conference on 19 October 2012 with participation of 45 industry representatives from a total of 21 countries from all continents.
Dr Fatih Birol, IEA Chief Economist and Chair of the IEA Energy Business Council, opened the session to welcome participants and presented the key findings of just-released World Energy Outlook 2012 Special Report “Iraq Energy Outlook”. His presentation was followed by keynote speeches from two renowned international experts:
Mr Tariq Shafiq, Chairman at Petrolog and Associates and one of the founding fathers of Iraq’s oil industry; and
Prof. Xiaojie Xu of the China Academy of Sciences and former Director of overseas investment, CNPC.
Interventions were followed by a lively debate on the prospects for Iraq’s energy and economic development and on the potential implications for global energy markets and geopolitical relations.
