IEA urges use of cogeneration and district energy for global energy security and climate change mitigation

IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka, together with Dr. R.K. Pachauri of the IPCC, joined several high-level government ministers at the carbon capture and storage (CCS) conference in Bergen/Norway. They cited the urgent need for CCS full-scale demonstration to achieve climate change mitigation goals, and toured Norway’s Sleipner, one of the pioneering CCS projects that has successfully injected CO2 since 1996. IEA Executive Director Tanaka participated in the launch of the Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI) in Geneva, during the Geneva Motor Show. Four organisations -- the FIA Foundation, International Transport Forum (ITF) and UN Environment Program and IEA -- developed GFEI to achieve a 50% reduction in automobile energy use per kilometre by 2050.

Davos: IEA Emphasises Clean Energy Role in Economic Recovery

At the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka called for governments to invest in energy efficiency and clean technologies to bolster economic recovery and achieve climate change policy objectives.  Mr. Tanaka took part in a number of energy-related discussions ranging from investment challenges to energy security to the potential of new technologies such as electric vehicles.  IEA Chief Economist Fatih Birol also participated in WEF sessions and presented results of IEA work.  Mr. Tanaka is pictured here with Japanese PM Taro Aso.

Executive Director Tanaka meets Minister Al Naimi at COP 14

Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka caught up with Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Naimi, Saudi Arabian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, while in Poznan for the UN Climate Change Conference on 11 December. The two men reiterated their desire to see ongoing cooperation between OPEC and the IEA.

Mr. Tanaka visited Algiers to meet with OPEC Conference President, and Algeria's Minister of Energy and Mines, HE Dr. Chakib Khelil.  Issues discussed included the current oil market situation and steps to follow-up on the recent Jeddah Energy Meeting.  Whilst in Algiers, Mr. Tanaka also held talks with the President of Sonatrach, Mr. Mohammed Meziane, and inspected the Hamma desalination plant which is currently the largest plant of its kind in Africa.

The IEA has updated its Energy Efficiency Policies and Measures Database, with the assistance of government representatives. With records dating back to 2000, this database arguably represents the most comprehensive collection of national policies on energy efficiency policies for IEA member countries as welll as information on some non-member countries.

Aiming at a Clean, Clever and Competitive Energy Future: IEA Work in Support of the G8 - Since being tasked by G8 leaders at their 2005 summit in Gleneagles, the IEA has conducted extensive work on improving energy efficiency and accelerating the deployment of new energy technologies.  The results of this analysis and specific policy recommendations have been presented to subsequent G8 summits in St. Petersburg in 2006, Heiligendamm in 2007 and Toyako (Japan) in 2008.  IEA Executive Director, Nobuo Tanaka is pictured here with Chinese President Hu Jintao. IEA Statement - OPEC leaves output unchanged - The decision by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries to leave output unchanged may allow crude stocks to rebuild because refineries are in maintenance and demand seasonally slows, but high prices are sending a strong signal that the market thinks it is not enough.

IEA statement on OPEC decision to leave output unchanged - While the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries has decided to leave output unchanged, crude oil supplies remain very tight, as the IEA has noted for the past six months. At the same time, very high oil prices may be adding additional pressures to currently significant economic risks. We have seen a sharp draw in petroleum stocks in OECD countries which will have ongoing effects.

Mr. Tanaka greets Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda shortly after he had delivered a special address to the World Economic Forum in Davos.  Prime Minister Fukuda’s address outlined the agenda for Japan's Presidency of the G8 Summit in Toyakocho, Hokkaido, in July.  This included a proposal for the formulation of an international framework of collaboration in which the IEA would play a role to support the acceleration of technological development in order to achieve dramatic cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

We have emphasised our concern about the continued tightness in the oil market in recent issues of the Oil Market Report.
