Background:
|
International biomass trade has been growing rapidly over the past years. Biomass fuels such as wood pellets, ethanol, vegetable oils, wood chips and agricultural residues are widely traded, not only on short distances, but also on intercontinental scale (e.g. from North America, Latin America and South-East Asia to Europe). However, while the production and consumption statistics on biofuels are generally well organized and mapped, availability of statistical data on international trade of biofuels is still limited. IEA Bioenergy Task 40 has recognized these requirements from market parties, policy makers and scientists. The objectives of this workshop were:
1. To bring together various institutions currently involved in collecting international biomass trade statistics (such as the IEA Energy Statistics Division & Renewable Unit, Eurostat, FAO, UN ECE / Timber Section, the European Commission and others) for information dissemination and exchange; to summarize which data is currently collected, what is lacking, and what data would be required to fulfill various needs from industry, academia and policy makers
2. To explore the possibilities to set up a framework for the development of international biomass trade statistics and consistent mapping of international trade flows |
