The IEA provides support for over 40 international co-operation and collaboration agreements in energy technology R&D,
deployment and information dissemination. OECD Member countries, non-Member countries and international organizations
may participate. For more information, see our Technology Agreements page.

Enhanced Oil Recovery

Since 1979, the International Energy Agency has sponsored an implementing agreement on enhanced oil recovery. This group meets once per year to hold a two-day symposium and a one-day workshop. This is a task-shared agreement without an operating agent or a central budget. The meetings have migrated in the past decade from closed sessions to open sessions where the information is deemed to be in the public domain. The 2002 workshop was held in Caracas, Venezuela on September 9 and 10 and was followed by a one-day symposium on the subject of optimizing recovery in high temperature/high pressure reservoirs. The 2003 workshop was held in Regina, Canada on September 8 - 9, 2003 and was followed on September 10, 2003 by a one-day symposium on geological storage of carbon dioxide. Attendance usually ranges from 50 to 75 persons all with a highly technicalbackground. Many bilateral conversations occur and the conference helps create international research EOR projects. The real value of the meeting is the small close group who share experience from their various nations perspectives. Within the implementing agreement there are six tasks: * Studies of fluids and interfaces in porous media * Fundamental research on surfactants and polymers * Development of gas flooding techniques * Thermal recovery * Dynamic reservoir characterization * Emerging technologies
