IEA analysis in the Energy Technology Perspectives 2008 report shows that CCS will need to deliver almost 20% of the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions we need to achieve in 2050 if we are to cost-effectively stabilise GHG concentrations in the atmosphere at an acceptable level. The IEA’s Energy Technology Perspectives BLUE Map Scenario shows that the power sector will need to be largely decarbonised by 2050. As seen in figure above, given the projected increase in emissions, we will need to use a portfolio of available and future technologies to achieve our climate goals at lowest cost. In scenarios without CCS, the costs for achieving climate stabilisation in 2050 are at least 70% higher than scenarios that include CCS.
