CCS Technology Status

There are currently 4 full-scale geologic CO2 storage projects in the world that have already successfully stored millions of tonnes of CO2 for many years without leakage. A million tonnes of CO2 is equivalent to the emissions of 400 000 (European) cars in a year.  Other projects are underway which demonstrate various CO2 capture, transport and storage options; see the IEA GHG Implementing Agreement’s database for more information.

Existing and Planned CCS Projects

However, there is an urgent need for additional full-scale CO2 storage projects to lower the technology costs and generate monitoring and verification data that will inform the process. The G8 heads of government have recognised this, and at the Hokkaido Summit in 2008, G8 leaders strongly supported the launching of 20 large-scale CCS demonstration projects globally by 2010 taking into account various national circumstances with a view to beginning broad deployment of CCS by 2020.
