CCS Roadmap

The IEA’s 2008 publication Energy Technology Perspectives developed roadmaps for 17 energy technologies that will be needed to achieve long-term global energy and climate change goals. These roadmaps identify necessary near-, medium- and long-term milestones to guide the international community in technology and policy development.

The CCS roadmaps show that a great deal needs to be accomplished in the next 10-15 years if CCS is to make a meaningful contribution to global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction efforts by 2050.

Global CCS Roadmap for 2050:  Some Milestones

In November 2008, to foster greater international collaboration and information sharing, the IEA launched an International CCS Roadmap process by inviting stakeholders to discuss the  key milestones needed for CCS financial, technical, legal and international co-operation developments necessary to underpin the successful expansion of CCS. This process will build on the ETP Roadmaps and other national and international CCS roadmap efforts, with the goal of improving international collaboration by identifying gaps and potential duplication and providing policy makers and industry with concrete action items and milestones for CCS development. The 2nd and final meeting took place in February 2009; the IEA expects to release the CCS Roadmap at the IEA Ministerial in October 2009. For more information about the IEA CCS Roadmap, or to participate, contact us.
