Federal House in Order

Country  Canada
Year Implemented 2001
Policy Status In force
Date Ended On August 12, 2003, the Government of Canada announced the investment of $50 million from Budget 2003 towards the extension of the Federal House in Order Program. The Government of Canada recognizes it has a responsibility to reduce its own emissions. To show leadership and contribute to achieving Canada’s overall goals, the 11 federal departments that account for 95 percent of all Government of Canada GHG emissions have committed to reduce those emissions to 31 percent below 1990 levels by 2010. Some of the specific measures the Government of Canada will take include the following:
- Building all of its new facilities to be 25 percent more energy efficient then the existing Model National Energy Code for Buildings;
- Retrofitting a further 20 percent of its commercial buildings by 2010 to improve energy efficiency, financed through energy cost savings;
- Improving the energy efficiency of both existing and new housing that the Federal Government owns;
- Increasing the use of lower emitting vehicles in the federal fleet and reducing GHG emissions from fleet operations;
- Continuing to work toward fulfilling our commitment to meet 20 percent of federal electricity requirements from emerging low or non-emitting sources;
- Basing the purchases of energy-using equipment on life cycle costs, which will include both operating energy costs and a value place on the GHG emissions.
