A “Declaration of Co-operation between India and the IEA” was signed on 30 April 1998. India is one of only three non-OECD countries with whom the IEA has signed this type of declaration. The key objectives of IEA-India cooperation are to assist India in its transition to a market-based economy, to integrate India into the IEA’s energy policy framework and to obtain in-depth knowledge of India’s energy and environmental system. The Declaration is designed to enable the broadest scope of cooperation and to allow flexibility in view of changing energy policy priorities. Core areas of activities have been energy statistics, indicators and data management, energy supply security, energy efficiency and environmental issues, sector reform and pricing issues, technology cooperation and studies of the power, coal and gas sectors. Priorities of cooperation are established through an annual high-level policy dialogue between the IEA and India.
