| Bulgaria has continued its ambitious energy reforms in line with the government’s 2002 energy strategy. The sale of the three regional electricity distributors to strategic investors (EVN, EON, CEZ) for EUR 0.7 billion was finalized and important generation plants have been tendered. The government agreed with the EU to shut down two nuclear blocks at Kozloduy (880 MW) and plans to complete the nuclear plant of Belene (1GW) for an estimated cost of EUR 2 billion. Bulgaria entered the EU on January 1, 2007 and must apply the EU directives and take part in elaborating EU energy policy and legislation. Existing directives include ones on energy security, nuclear safety, Internal Energy Market (IEM) and the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). | ||||||||
