Our Mission
The IEA works to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for its 29 member countries and beyond. Our mission is guided by four main areas of focus: energy security, economic development, environmental awareness and engagement worldwide.

Leadership
Management of the IEA Secretariat is headed by Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol and Deputy Executive Director Paul Simons.
Structure
The Governing Board is the IEA’s main decision making body, supported by a range of standing groups, committees, and affiliated groups from business and industry.
Membership
A country must meet a number of criteria related to energy security to join the IEA. The IEA currently has 29 member countries, 2 accession countries, and 6 association countries.
History
The IEA was founded in 1974 to help countries collectively respond to oil supply disruptions. While this remains a key aspect of its work, the IEA has evolved and expanded.
Work at the IEA
The Agency has a staff of over 240 enthusiastic professionals, including energy analysts, modellers, data managers and statisticians, technicians, and support staff.
Training
An ever-growing function of the IEA is to share knowledge and best practice in the field of energy globally through workshops, webinars, videos, and more.
