The IEA Energy Technology R&D Statistics Service is a joint service
of the Energy Statistics Division and the Energy Technology Policy
Division of the International Energy Agency.
The database extends the coverage of the publication by incorporating more recent
data on budgets in national currencies (in nominal and real prices), in USD (at
latest year prices and exchange rates), in USD (at latest year prices and PPP)
and in Euro (at latest year prices and exchange rates). Also, the database shows
economic indicators used for deflating the R&D budgets and calculating indicators.
The government energy technology R&D budgets are submitted on an annual questionnaire
every year to the IEA Secretariat by appropriate Administrations in national
currencies. The exchange rates are published in Main Economic Indicators (OECD)
and the GDP and GDP deflators come from the OECD Economic Outlook (OECD).
The database is divided into two parts:
1) Government Energy Technology R&D Budgets
Budgets are available for several R&D activities: energy efficiency, fossil fuels,
renewable energy sources, nuclear fission, nuclear fusion, hydrogen and fuel cells and other power and storage technologies. Data for 26 IEA Member countries are available. (No data are provided
for Luxembourg). Moreover, data for certain countries are not available for all
years. Data for the European Commission are currently being revised and have
not been included.
It
should be added, that even the best organised data gathering cannot remedy the
non-availability of data, which inevitably leaves gaps in the picture. For instance,
an accurate assessment - incorporating private industry support - of total national
R&D efforts directed at energy technology is difficult to obtain, due to a lack
of data and to variations in the way private industry's energy technology R&D
is measured from one country to another. Furthermore, government budgetary constraints
have limited the collection of such information and related reporting in many
countries.
2) Economic Indicators (used for deflating and currency
conversion)
Four series are available: US Dollar Exchange
rate, Purchasing Power Parity, Nominal GDP in national currency and GDP Deflator.
